Q   -     What is the functions of Myanma Timber Enterprise?

A   -   Myanma Timber Enterprise (MTE) is one of the two major organizations under the Ministry of Forestry: the other is the Forest Department. The functions of MTE is exploitation and utilization of the forest resources, whereas the Forest Department is responsible for the conservation and management of the forests. Myanmar maintains ifs forests on a sustainable yield forest management basis.

          MTE is the trading arm of the Ministry of Forestry that is responsible for extracting, milling and marketing (domestic and export) of teak and non-teak hardwoods. It is the only State Organization that is authorized to extract timber from the forests.

 Q   -   What can consider for investment?

A   -   Foreign investors can consider investing in timber as well as other forest products. Investment and development of an integrated down – stream wood – based industry to produce moulding, venerr, laminated parquet, furniture and parts for interior decoration, using teak and hardwood mixed species.

 Q   -   What investment possibilities can be taken?

A   -   Investment in downstream industries can be undertaken accordingly;

(a)    100% investment by foreign companies with certain profit share.

(b)   Joint venture with Myanma Timber Enterprise.

 Q   -   What type of Business is encouraged in the industry?

A   -   Downstream value added production business is encouraged and priority given over other forms of the following business;

(a)    Timber, rattan and bamboo based downstream value added industries,

(b)   Value added downstream industries coupled with plantations for long term expanded  production.

 Q   -   How long in duration of Investment with be?

A   -   The initial duration of the contract period on an average will be (15) years depending upon the type of industry and value of investment.  The duration will be extended further with (5) years two terms with the permission of Myanmar Investment Commission.

 Q   -     How much should be investment?

A   -     Foreign investor should be invested minimum amount at least US$ 0.5 million.

 Q   -     Where is the location of investment?

A   -     Location of a 100% investment would be on a M T E designated land in Yangon or in the districts.
